Welcome to the ICONZ neglected zoonoses research projects database

The objective of this database is to obtain a clear picture of the current world wide research into the diagnosis, burdens and control of eight neglected zoonoses.

The collected information will be used to identify significant research gaps. Research funders will have access to the outputs from this work and will be able to use this evidence to target research and development funds to the areas of greatest need. Others working on the neglected zoonoses will find the information of use in supporting and developing their work.

The neglected zoonoses include the eight diseases shown below. Please note that we are only interested if they are caused by the listed pathogens.

Anthrax: Bacillus anthracis
Brucellosis: Brucella abortus
Brucella melitensis
Brucella suis
Bovine TB: Mycobacterium bovis
Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Cysticercosis: Bovine cysticercosis / Taenia saginata
Porcine cysticercosis / Taenia solium
Echinococcosis: Echinococcus granulosus
Leishmaniasis: Leishmania aethiopica
Leishmania braziliensis
Leishmania donovani
Leishmania infantum
Leishmania major
Leishmania mexicana
Leishmania tropica
Classical Rabies: Rabies virus
Trypanosomiasis: Trypanosoma brucei gambiense
Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense
Other tsetse transmitted trypansomes

This project is funded by the European Union under the Framework 7 and is part of the ICONZ project (Integrated Control of Neglected Zoonoses). Its overall objectives are to improve human health and animal production in developing countries through control of neglected zoonoses.

Endemic zoonotic diseases are frequently neglected despite being major causes of ill-health in developing countries. The ICONZ project is designed to integrate the control of neglected zoonoses through scientific innovation and public engagement. It will be a major study over a period of five years to assess disease burdens and to improve and develop tools for the diagnosis and control of 8 neglected zoonoses.

Researchers and funders who are asked to participate in populating the database with research projects will be able to access the database at any time. It will be possible for these registered users to add or modify details of current research projects using an online survey and use the database as a resource for networking and information related to zoonoses research.

Data confidentiality

As an EU funded project we anticipate that some basic information from the database will be accessible to members of the public as well as registered users. The project title, the name of the research institute and country, source of the information, dates of the project and the diseases and research categories covered by the project will be visible.

However, if registered users would like to restrict access to the data they enter it will be possible to limit access to entries to registered users only (other researchers/funders) or to the database administrators only. There will be opportunity to indicate your preferences by selecting the appropriate access level when project information is entered into the survey.

Thank you in advance for your participation and input into the research database. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us via email. Please click here and replace _at_ with @.
