Bio:

Rob Christley is Head of Epidemiology and Public Health in the School of Veterinary Medicine, co-director of the National Centre for Zoonosis Research and a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Public Health. His core interest is the dual interaction between animal health and society; the social effects of animal health issues and the impact of human behaviour on animal health.
Animal health impacts society through many mechanisms; zoonotic diseases and animal induced injury directly impact health, concern regarding such events may induce fear and modify behaviour and those who own or manage animals, or trade in animal products, animal diseases may have social and economic impacts. Rob Christley’s research touches on all of these areas and includes: the epidemiology of a range of zoonotic diseases (including enteric pathogens & rabies); systematic review of risk factors for dog bites; the impact of “food-scares” on consumer behaviour; the social and economic impacts of poultry diseases, and of rabies, the rural poor of Ethiopia.
Human behaviour also impacts on animal health. Areas of research interest include: farmer behavioural responses to introduction of pre-movement testing for bovine Tuberculosis; evaluation of animal health education methods for Ethiopian farmers; owner understanding and experience of colic in horses.
